My Natural Year-a 2017 poem

I learned to hate my hair

Before I knew how to love it.

I can’t say for sure

Whether it was the media

or just my self doubts.

I never liked

How big it was

The attention

It would bring

Was embarrassing.

I never understood

Why God would give

Me such a burden

As shallow as it may sound.

I burned my hair

So I could be

The way I thought

Normal was

And even then

I was never happy with how

It looked.

How unnatural it seemed.

It’s been almost a year

Since I’ve decided

To understand how I was

Born.

Now I see

Natural hair

As art, a blessing perhaps

That each curl

Holds a sense

Of your personality.

Although I’m able

To be more proud

Of my curls

I still wonder

“How can you

Run your fingers

Through hair

As chaotic as this?”

And I answer that

By saying

Your hands may not run

Easily but they will be

Entrapped

In love

In culture

In acceptance

In hair product

And in curls

That knows where

It should stand.

I will always go

Through stages

Of forgetting

Who I am

But when I do

I must come back to this

To remind myself

How amazing it truly

Was

That day

I started

My natural year.

Baking Saturday and Marzia’s Box

Well hello! It’s certainly been a while since I’ve felt motivated to sit down and write on this page. It’s kind of been a mixture of school antics and sheer laziness, but besides that stress factor, some cool things have happened!

Around last week, my Marzia Holiday Subscription Box came in with its wonderful products that I’ve been savoring. I’ve been subscribed to her YouTube channel for quite some time now and it’s been lovely to see how much her life changes and how much mine has as well. She’s a gorgeous gal and if you haven’t already, I’d suggest giving her a follow.

Besides the adorable packaging, I’ve really loved using the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. It’s a light mist you spritz on your face and hands and is supposed to revive the skin. I love the subtle rose-scent and I like to use it right after my shower and before I put on my makeup for the day. Since the past year, my skin has shown improvements with my acne spots and this definitely helps to add some moisture to my face during the winter.

The next face product is also from Jurlique, and it’s the Activating Water Essence. This has the same effects as the Balancing Mist; keeping the moisture locked in your skin. I haven’t used it too often since it is a small bottle and I want to keep it as long as possible, but this also works pretty well and does seem to absorb in the skin rather quickly.

Next is the Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream. At first I was a bit wary that it contained Horse Chestnut Seed Extract since your girl’s allergic to tree nuts. I had checked the ingredients of the box’s products before we had bought it, but I guess I didn’t check it as thoroughly (I was just excited to get the box, okay?). Anyway, I did try it and I didn’t die(hooray!) I put this on before I go to bed so it can do it’s magic as I sleep. It doesn’t really seem to have a scent, it’s kind of cucumber-y but maybe not?

I was very excited that the box came with two face masks. I’ve already used the Moisturizing Recovery Mask and I still have the Radiance Revitalizing Mask, but the mask I did use worked well! Face masks do feel awkward to wear and I always think I look like some sort of Leatherface character, but nonetheless my face was quote: “very shiny and glowing” (my mom 2k16.) I’m excited to use my next one and probably some more pore strips. All I need is a velvety robe and a wineglass of sparkling cider (since I’m still too lame to drink yet hehe.)

On to more of the beauty products, I received Clinique’s lip color+primer in the color ‘Love Pop.’ It’s such a pretty berry color and by looking at it, there’s little sparkles throughout the lipstick. It’s such a holiday look and I can’t wait for some more occasions to sport this lippie out.

Next is the Tarteist mascara by tarte, and I don’t know if it’s because it’s still new or if it’s just a really good mascara, but this formula seems to make my eyelashes look even longer than many of the other mascaras I’ve used in the past. No complaints there!

The final beauty product was the Ultrathin Liquid Eyeliner Pen by blinc. Thank you so so much Marzia for putting this in the box, this is the best eyeliner I’ve tried so far! I stopped wearing eyeliner for some time since it was so stressful to get the wings to match and I go back and forth on how I look with eyeliner, but this one goes on so smoothly and precisely, and I’ve gotten quite a lot of compliments whenever I put it on.

The last product in the box was a Popsocket, which is a phone grip/stand for your phone. I love the little flower design on it and it does really help me from dropping my phone since, I won’t lie, I am on it all day pretty much. (And yes, I do have a little drawing of myself on the back of my phonecase.)

Overall, I am so happy I could finally get one of her subscription boxes since she’s such a lovely girl that I support. Now, since I’m all done with this, I hope everyone has a great rest of their day and I’m off to eat some tacos and bake a whole lotta holiday cookies. merry crisis indeed.
